CAMBRIDGE IGCSE · MATHEMATICS 0580 · STUDY GUIDE
Core or Extended? Start with the right IGCSE maths questions.
Core and Extended are different entry tiers in Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580). The appropriate preparation depends on the student's current understanding, intended qualification pathway and the school's entry decision—not simply whether one set of questions looks harder.

THE KEY DISTINCTION
What changes between Core and Extended?
Core covers the foundation content and is designed for candidates targeting grades C–G on the A*–G scale. Extended includes the Core content plus additional material and greater depth, and is designed for candidates targeting grades A*–E. A school helps determine the appropriate entry. These are Cambridge 0580 tier descriptions, not a prediction of an individual student's result.
Changing tiers is not simply a matter of practising the same worksheet for longer. Students need a clear map of which ideas they understand, which additional techniques are required for their tier, and how accurately they explain multi-step reasoning.
For other grading variants, exam boards or qualifications, consult the actual entry documentation: Cambridge Mathematics (0580), the 9–1 variant (0980) and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics are not interchangeable labels.
CHECK THE EXAM SERIES
What about calculator and non-calculator papers?
Under the Cambridge 0580 2025–2027 syllabus, one paper in each tier is designated non-calculator. Cambridge also publishes a separate 2028–2030 syllabus. Before choosing past-paper practice, confirm the exam year, syllabus code and tier with the school; an old paper may not match the current structure.
Non-calculator preparation is not only mental arithmetic. It includes showing methods, using fractions and exact values sensibly, estimating to catch implausible answers, and explaining why a result is reasonable. Work through the published syllabus and specimen materials for the relevant year, not informal summaries alone.
TWO SHORT DIAGNOSTIC EXAMPLES
Check the reasoning before increasing difficulty.
Example 1 · A non-calculator check
Find three-quarters of 48. One approach divides 48 by four to obtain 12, then multiplies 12 by three to obtain 36. The reverse check is that one quarter is 12, so four quarters are 48. The useful habit is to show a method and check it mentally rather than guessing or reaching immediately for a calculator.
Example 2 · Reverse a percentage change
A price rises by 20% and becomes 96 units. Find the original price. Let the original be x; then 1.20x = 96, so x = 96 ÷ 1.20 = 80. Check by increasing 80 by 20%: 80 + 16 = 96. Subtracting 20% of 96 would answer a different question. This illustrates why interpreting the starting quantity matters.
These examples are teaching diagnostics, not claims that a particular question is officially a Core or Extended exam item. The published syllabus, specimen and past papers determine actual assessment expectations.
FIVE-POINT READINESS CHECK
A sensible next-step checklist.
- Confirm the syllabus: ask for the board, code (such as 0580), exam year, grade scale and entered tier.
- Diagnose understanding: attempt a short mix of number, algebra, geometry, probability and statistics problems before choosing practice priorities.
- Observe the method: mark errors as missing concept, incorrect operation, misread question or unclear working.
- Practise both paper conditions: use authentic current non-calculator and calculator materials as appropriate to the tier.
- Reassess with evidence: compare an independently completed set of questions with the earlier attempt; consult the school before any entry decision.
Core is not a failure and Extended is not automatically the best fit. A useful learning plan begins with accurate information about the learner and their course, rather than a guaranteed grade.

PERSONAL SUPPORT
Start with the actual syllabus and learner's needs.
Tell me the syllabus, exam year, mathematics topic and current goal. A parent or guardian should initiate contact for a learner under 18. Lessons are primarily online; in-person requests in Egypt are assessed individually.
